Belmetal’s Board of Directors has elected Philippe Mercier, Managing Director of Groupe Aciers Grosjean, as President of the organisation. He succeeds Vanessa Espeel.

This appointment comes at a key moment for the Belgian steel and metals sector. Faced with rising costs, increasing regulatory pressure, trade tensions and the imperative of decarbonisation, companies in the sector are operating in an increasingly demanding environment.

About Philippe Mercier

Philippe Mercier is an industrial entrepreneur and experienced business leader who has been active for nearly forty years in the transport, automotive, logistics and steel distribution sectors. Since 2015, he has served as Managing Director of Groupe Aciers Grosjean in Charleroi. Before that, he held several executive and management positions in Belgium and France, always at the intersection of technology, operations, customer service and business development.

Within Groupe Comet and Aciers Grosjean, he has notably developed in-depth expertise in transport, logistics and inland waterway operations, with hands-on knowledge of the entire industrial value chain.

As a Director of Belmetal, a member of Eurometal and an elected Director of the Hainaut Chamber of Commerce, he closely follows issues related to competitiveness, energy, mobility, employment and the industrial future of Belgium and Europe.

At the heart of the Belgian industry’s supply chains

Belmetal represents companies that supply the construction, manufacturing, energy, infrastructure and energy transition sectors on a daily basis. In this context, the federation intends to strengthen its role as a dialogue partner for public authorities and social partners, in order to defend the conditions needed to maintain a strong industrial activity in Belgium.

“Steel distributors are at the heart of the supply chains that provide Belgian industry, construction and infrastructure with a circular product. Our priority is to preserve the conditions that enable companies to invest and create jobs within a climate framework that protects the competitiveness of our industrial grid,” says Philippe Mercier, President of Belmetal.

Under Philippe Mercier’s presidency, Belmetal will continue its work as a professional federation and social partner, with a focus on employee training, defending the competitiveness of steel and metal distributors and, more broadly, contributing to reflections on the industrial future of Belgium and Europe.
