The national welding and metalworking competition Steel Warriors has been selected as an inspiring example in a recent publication by the King Baudouin Foundation. This recognition confirms the strong social and educational value of the competition, through which Belmetal has been showcasing technical talent since 2022 and empowering young people in their role within the manufacturing industry.

In Building Positive Choices – Working Together Towards a Stronger Image of Labour-Market-Oriented Education” (only available in Dutch), the King Baudouin Foundation highlights concrete initiatives that contribute to a sustainable revaluation of this type of education. Steel Warriors is explicitly mentioned (p. 55) as an effective, practice-oriented example.

Technical talent in the real world

During Steel Warriors, students in the final stage of secondary education in metalworking/welding design and build a fully original steel construction as a team. The competition goes beyond the traditional classroom, combining technical skills with creativity, collaboration and problem-solving. In doing so, young people experience the reality of the sector while gaining confidence in their own abilities.

According to the King Baudouin Foundation, Steel Warriors helps inspire young people and the wider public to engage with technology and the metal sector. At the same time, it strengthens the links between schools and companies and supports students in developing self-confidence, craftsmanship and pride in their role within the manufacturing industry.

Broad societal impact

The publication identifies six key building blocks for strengthening the image of labour-market-oriented education. Steel Warriors addresses five of them, making it one of the most comprehensive initiatives in the study. This confirms that the competition is not only a sector-driven initiative, but also a lever for broader societal impact.

More than a competition

This recognition highlights that Steel Warriors is much more than a competition. It is a powerful instrument to reshape the narrative around labour-market-oriented education: moving away from stereotypes towards quality, future prospects and pride. In a context of structural shortages of technical talent, Steel Warriors demonstrates what technical education truly represents today.

With Steel Warriors, Belmetal invests in craftsmanship and in sustainable careers for the future of the metal sector.
